Second Kolchak novel by Jeff Rice, adaptation of the screenplay by Richard Matheson

Kolchak The Night Strangler Kolchak The Night Stalker Book 2 edition by Jeff Rice Richard Matheson Literature Fiction eBooks

The movie "The Night Stalker" was based on a novel by Jeff Rice. The movie was so successful, that it spawned a sequel, "The Night Strangler". Unlike the first movie, the second movie was not based on a book: it was written as a movie script first, by Richard Matheson (a legendary horror and sci-fi writer). This eBook is a novelization of Matheson's screenplay, by Jeff Rice, the author of the book that the screenplay was a sequel to.

This novelization has very little value as a stand-alone work of fiction: it's not particularly well written, and most of it is a line-by-line rehash of the movie. If you haven't seen the Night Strangler movie, go watch that movie instead: it's great, and I think its actually better than the first film. The dialogue is snappy, the action scenes are fast-paced, the setting of foggy Seattle is wonderful.

But if you've seen the movie and liked it, then reading this book is something you might find rewarding, for a number of reasons:

(1) The book was clearly based on an older version of the script. There are lines of dialogue, and even minor plot points, that are different in the book than in the movie. Mostly, the dialogue in the movie is sharper and shorter: this book retains a lot of the fat that was cut from the final version of the script. It is interesting to see what an early version of the script must have looked like, and what was changed at the last minute.

(2) The book goes into far more detail on the background of the villain, and the background of alchemy generally (spoiler: the villain is an alchemist). I don't know if this was Matheson's original background for the villain, or an embellishment that Rice added.

(3) The book goes into far more detail about the relationship between Kolchak and Louise Harper (his love interest in the movie). There are a number of awkwardly-written love scenes between the two in the book, which are totally absent from the movie. Rice is not good at writing these scenes: he should stick to writing murder scenes, which he is much better at!

(4) There are a number of references in the book to Jack the Ripper, which seems odd because the plot of the book and movie have nothing to do with Jack the Ripper. BUT, if you know the history of the movie, you'll know that originally this was going to be a movie about Jack the Ripper on the loose in 1970's Seattle. That was changed at a very early point, and the Ripper was replaced with a murderous alchemist: those references to the Ripper must be the author's tip of the cap to the original intended plot.

Overall, the value of this book to me was not the actual contents (which mirror the movie, but are often more plodding than the movie). The value was the insight I got into the production of the movie, from the differences between this book and the final script.

Kolchak The Night Strangler Kolchak The Night Stalker Book 2 edition by Jeff Rice Richard Matheson Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Fewer typos than the edition of The Night Stalker, but still too many to be able to enjoy this fun little book to the fullest.
This has an odd genesis. Originally a template by Matheson based on characters created by Jeff Rice who created the original Night Stalker. Rice then adapted it into a novel. Well written and fast paced, I was disappointed with the numerous typos in this kindle edition.
I've heard of this book for years, but have never seen it in print. I'm glad to have the opportunity to read it at last, since The Night Strangler has always been one of my favorite movies. Best of all is the way the manuscript fills in the gaps, by explaining the motivations and history of the villain of the piece. And this is a grittier Kolchak than the movies and TV presents. I have great fondness for this story!
A great novelization of one of the best horror/suspense movies ever made. Rice did an excellent job of making the down on his luck reporter grittier and more real then they could on television. Having been to Seattle numerous times he did a great job in painting the backdrop to the story. Love every word. I just wish there weren’t so many typos in the version.
Brought me back in time to when I watched Carl on TV and enjoyed his bumbling ways ... If you read it before and saw the movies/and show this will be enjoyable BUT if you are a different generation and new to Kolchak it is worth the journey ....
Full disclosure I've been a devoted fan of The Night Stalker since I was a little kid and his character was one of the reasons why I studied English and Journalism in college and ended up being a college professor. I even have the series on DVD. This story is one of the longer two hour movies made for television and the movie is pretty good but this novelization is even better! There's more background and Kolchak's character is more three-dimensional. And the dialogue is very similar but even that is just a bit better than the movie's. Rice does an exemplary job of presenting these characters just as we may know them from the TV show but even they are somehow more vivid, the dialogue just a bit more crisp. I highly recommend it to any fan of the TV show.
It's so easy to hear Darren McGavin's voice when reading this novel. If you were, or are (thanks, MeTV) a fan of the 1975 television series and the 2 movies that launched them, the first-person aspect of these origin novels is strongly reminiscent of actor McGavin's voice-over at the opening of each episode. Jeff Rice, who created the character and was shamefully squeezed out of production during the series, was a warm and genial writer whose story flows as easily and as watching TV, with humor and horror in balance measure. There were a LOT of typos, and I reported them all through my - not very cool for a book that was written nearly 50 years ago! But they were simple, basic things ("too" - not "to") I hope that " Content Experts" are truly on the job.
