Looking for that spark of inspiration? Dying to know the secrets of what it means to be a successful author? Searching for how to drown the demons of doubt that keep you from putting your soul on paper?

This is not the book for you.

This caustic guide to writing offers a scathing look at why so much bad writing exists. Why the most annoying tropes show up again and again, and how to correct them. Elements of world-building, character, and dialogue are examined, along with tidbits like how to write animals, medieval warfare, and convincing magic. It also includes a special section on how to write fanfiction. Or rather, how not to write it and why doing so is a god-awful waste of your time.

Sectioned off in easy to read list formats, The Sarcastic Guide To Writing offers quick tips on how you're doing things wrong. Read it, and you will be enlightened. Not necessarily happy, but enlightened. There are other books out there on writing that will hold your hand, but they won't tell you the truth.

This one does.

If you're a crybaby, you probably shouldn't read this one.

I've been following these essays on DeviantART where she has posted them under the screen name of Droemar, and each time there was a new one I read it immediately. Having them all collected in one neat package is worth the eight bucks.

The layout is to divide each area of writing into a selection of five tips, for example a five tip section on weapons, or five tips on characters, or what have you. Throughout, Jennings provides guidelines to build a better world, and criticism of those who get it wrong, and explanations for why they get it wrong. Each tip is well thought out and full of cogent points. It is geared mostly for fantasy or scifi, and has some information and criticisms of fan fiction as well, but most of her tips are easily generalized to other genres. A literary fiction writer may have little use of her five tips on magic, but the other 20 some categories will come in handy.

If you are a Twilight or Eragon fan, some of her criticism may not be to your liking. The title of the guide is not a lie, for her critical style is best described as biting. However, it is also clear and on point, and will leave no doubt as to exactly what fault she has found and why it is bad. Her sharp style is engaging and will keep you reading and hopefully absorbing the useful information she weaves into even her most eviscerating comments.

The only major flaw I found is in the grammar. It is occasionally flawed, which is a bit jarring, especially when you get to the five tips on grammar where there is a miss use of the semicolon in the very first sentence of the first section. While grammar is always an appropriate topic when it comes to writing well, Jennings may have been better off just pointing her readers to a copy of Strunk and White's Elements of Style instead. However, her occasional flubs are usually not that jarring, and not many people wish to pursue the esoteric rules of correct usage of the semicolon in any case.

Another, more minor issue is her reliance on the TVTropes website. The website and the tropes found therein are mentioned fairly frequently as an authority on various tip subjects. However, TVTropes is pretty awesome, so Your Mileage May Vary on this particular issue.

So over all, I'd recommend this as a great guide to writing, especially for beginning writers and those looking for something a little more biting than the average writing guide.

The Sarcastic Guide To Writing eBook Laura Jennings Reviews

I was interested in this for quite a while because, I happen to write a lot. However, I just got around to it a while a back because, I learned that I could download onto my computer.

I found the advice helpful because, all of it were so thorough. That said, I wanted to mention a few sections animals, religion, fan fiction, and relationships.

First off, the animals section helped me realize how a lot of authors fail at writing animals. They often anthropomorphize animals too much and it gets to the point, they have to insist it's an animal. (For the record, some anthropomorphizing is alright because, you need relatable characters.) On the plus side, some authors don't fail at this.

Next, the religion section stood out to me for two reasons. First off, the author suggested looking at Greek gods for reprimands. Wait a minute. Is she saying give people a reason to worship them or not do that? Then again, I learned not to respect people who overreact. Also, the author mentioned ancestors then went onto say that if they're going to be like StarClan, they might as well as not exist. (To be fair, she's not wrong because, StarClan almost never helps yet gets an disproportional amount of respect.) The author went offered an idea for a story where the Warriors strike out against Star Clan.

In addition, the fanfiction section stood out to me because, I've written a lot of them. I do agree with some of the arguments posed, I felt that she should've added another reason. When people write fanfiction, they soon find themselves surrounded by fans. They get so used to praise, they don't handle criticism well.

That said, I won't go as far as the author did and say not to do it (I'm not a dictator in the making), I would caution people against sharing it online for several reasons. First off, if you write the story, then you're going to love it. Chances are, you won't catch mistakes, even if they're obvious. Also, it's easy to lose interest in a story and not find motivation. By the same token, that could be due to writing not being your passion. If that's the case, that's fine. Just stick to short stories or stories with a few chapters. Furthermore, it can be hard keeping characters in-characters. Don't get me wrong. It's not every character; it's just some of the vicious ones. They get turned into lapdogs just because, they're dating the main protagonist. (To be fair, I found one FC (Fan Character)XGrimmjow fanfict was noteworthy. This author didn't turn the latter character into a placid kitten over that.)

The last section that stood out was the relationship section stood out to me. That drove home how abysmal heterosexual relationships are often written. The female partner can be borderline abusive or flat-out abusive to her boyfriend and nobody bats an eye. The guy partner tries that and people will start getting concerned. In addition, there are times when the fighting's constant. (That might be due to some thinking it can't be 'real' if they don't fight everyday. What sense does that make?) On the other hand, I've found that most pseudo-homosexual relationships lack depth. They don't face any issues together and just copulate in set roles. (Yeah, that's not those relationships work in real life.) Again, I say most because, I've seen stories of that kind that don't do that.

All things considered, I found to be this a great guide. I wouldn't recommend if you can't handle caustic remarks because, the book is full of them. However, I gave it three stars because, it didn't seem worth the money after I soldiered through Highsong.
