Silicone on Trial offers a meticulous and readable accounting of the breast implant fiasco, when an agency head’s arrogant mismanagement wrecked an industry and needlessly terrified millions of women, behavior that reveals a pernicious form of government corruption.”

--Henry Miller MD, former director, Office of Biotechnology, U.S. Food and Drug Administration

Silicone on Trial is an exceptional recounting of the controversial history of silicone medical devices, and how easily the public can be misled by dubious findings. Surgeon and historian Jack Fisher explains why government regulation falls prey to easy politics at the expense of sound science. Readers with breast implants or other implanted devices will find reassurance that silicone is safe for medical application. A plea is made for greater reliance on valid science instead of social activists and sensationalized media.

“A must read for surgeons frustrated by years of FDA paternalism, also for patients seeking truth about breast implants or any other silicone device."

--James Wells MD, past president, American Society of Plastic Surgery

Silicone On Trial Breast Implants and the Politics of Risk Jack Fisher 9780986267925 Books

Starting in 1974, I was intimately involved in almost every event described by Dr. Fisher. He has brilliantly summarized the important facts that every objective person involved in that fiasco knew before it started. The McCarthy style fraud perpetrated by Sidney Wolfe and his associates with the explicit cooperation of FDA Director David Kessler was a tragedy most people never understood. Read this book and understand the lasting damage self-appointed and misguided "social engineers" did to vulnerable women and the medical products business in the US.

Very informative. Great read. Very informative. He completely explains how silicone is not a hazard for breast implants.
Very informative, interesting read. The politics behind the silicone breast implants was enlightening. As a retired nurse I recall women having implants removed due to their claimed symptoms or fear of autoimmune disease. It should be required reading to make the public aware of scientific evidence compared to what is released to the public on many issues.
Dr. Fisher’s book is a tour de force of unfortunate events over more than two decades caused by unscientific minds in powerful positions. Those events led to profound, unnecessary and lasting damage to an industry and many individuals. That battle over silicone breast implants was fully in our view. That view was so distorted that most of us were profoundly misinformed. Many remain so. The amount of research done and written in readable detail before during and since the battle started remains impressive.
This battle resulted in unnecessary high anxiety for women who already had the implants, loss of proper care for women needing or desiring implants and payment of thousands of outlandish financial settlements for baseless injury claims.
The scientific studies that demonstrated the safety of silicone in humans were many and available before and after the men in and around the FDA began their unscientific charges that silicone breast implants caused cancer and other diseases. They ignored the published science. Ignored even when well-trained and gifted scientists informed the men in power of these many studies past and recent. These so called scientists choose to ignore years of solid data on its harmlessness.
In my mind the names of William Wiley, David Aaron Kessler and Sydney Wolfe, among others, will remain tarnished from knowing of their profoundly destructive maneuverings. In spite of knowing the ultimate conclusions, it reads like a mystery, so involved and detailed, you are uncertain of how it may end.
This book reminds the reader how the media and people in power can profoundly mislead the public. This book is an entertaining and informative read.

Well written! Outstanding reading for Plastic Surgeons, but an excellent read for people interested in the silicone breast implant fiasco and how the FDA really works.
As a retired MD., I highly recommend this book. Presented as a narrative about the artificial breast implant, it benefits enormously from the “sidebar” additions and expansions into several important associated areas.

This is the joy that all good historians bring to their readers, when well done, concise, and accurate.

Fisher does this beautifully.

He presents the sea, that for better and worse, human medical science must navigate.
It is no secret that sometimes the path has a vast collection of real and imagined problems.
How to sort out the true and significant is not always easy - and the motivations are equally varied and/or important. I think Fisher gives all of this an honest hearing.

Importantly, he has no financial axe to grind. He is out of the current commercial “Cosmetic” medical fray. I too was a Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon ( sad-to-say sounds really quaint), who did little or no cosmetic work. And “Advertising Doctors” were beyond all understanding - and almost non-existent when I started seeing patients (also sounds very quaint).

One of my sons is a Genetics Professor in a major university, and I have recommended this book for a pre-med course he teaches. Physicians-to-be can greatly benefit from a balanced idea about some of the things that lie ahead on their journey.

A personal disclosure/disclaimer note
I have known and respected Dr. Fisher since our shared training days. Although I wish he would, he has not paid me, or offered other renumeration to write this.

All will benefit from this scholarly, broad ranging, well written book, from, I think, an impartial, “umpire” who knows his stuff and writes well about it.
If you’re training to be a Plastic surgeon, interested in breast implants, or just want to know more about how politics affect FDA approval of medical devices, you need to read this book!
